What is ceremonial cacao – beyond chocolate
Everybody has eaten chocolate but many aren’t aware of the actual story of cacao and how it was used in ceremony by the ancient tribes of South and Central America. Chocolate was the western adaption of cacao created by the Europeans, however it had thousands of years of traditional use prior to this. We share the stories of the Chinchipe (5500 BC) and Chavin (1400 BC) tribes of Peru who used cacao as a ceremonial tool to deepen their spiritual connection to the earth and the heavens. Outlining their cosmovision and the role of cacao in awakening and healing and the differences between ceremonial cacao and chocolate. We also discuss the neuroscience of cacao and link the molecules to the uses, discussing neuroplasticity, mental health and the therapeutic profiling of cacao.
